The 'like' quotative is an interesting recent development in English. <em>Ne</em> is unlike that in that it doesn't set up a quotative or demonstration-like scene. Siwu does have a reasonably close equivalent to this 'like' in the form of the quotative/complementizer <em>sɔ</em> (featured in one of the glossed examples above). Ray, sorry for the late response. I wish I'd had the nerve to express my tentative theory that "ne" might be equivalent to English "like" - in a context that's partly meaningless padding and partly maintaining the whole conditional nature of the ongoing statement. "Like suppose I asked Mavis to go out for a meal like, and she said "Yes" like, and we went to MacDonalds like, and we had fries like" ... etc. Is that more or less what "Ne" is?
